“Folic acid awareness is needed now more than ever. We need to educate all women, especially Latinas, that folic acid can help prevent birth defects of the brain and spine,” said Connie Motter, National Council on Folic Acid Co-Chair. “The message for women is simple: Be good to yourself in the New Year – take a multivitamin with folic acid everyday, in addition to a healthy diet.”
Although all enriched cereals and grain products in the U.S. are fortified with the B-vitamin folic acid, only one-third of U.S. women of childbearing age consume the recommended amount. Taking a multivitamin with folic acid everyday is a key way that women can get the recommended amount of 400 mcg.
Women especially need folic acid, even if not planning to become pregnant, since 50% of all pregnancies are unplanned. Taking folic acid before pregnancy reduces the risk of birth defects of the brain and spine, called neural tube defects, by up to 70%.
Hispanic babies are 1.5 to 2 times more likely than others in the U.S. to be born with a neural tube defect (NTD). The CDC reports that Latinas in the United States consume the least amount of folic acid and have the least knowledge about folic acid among racial or ethnic groups in this country.
Two new studies led by researchers at the University of California,
Berkeley, suggest that taking maternity leave before and after the
birth of a baby is a good investment in terms of health benefits for
both mothers and newborns.
One study found that women who started their leave in the last
month of pregnancy were less likely to have cesarean deliveries, while
another found that new mothers were more likely to establish
breastfeeding the longer they delayed their return to work.

You’re nauseous, bloated and tired. Only retail therapy can rescue you. “You feel so much better if you look good,” explains Dina Igoe, 30, owner of Apple Seed Boutique in Alexandria, Virginia. Women like Igoe who own or work in maternity boutiques may become your best friend during pregnancy. Who better understands dressing for an expanding waistline, swollen feet and stretched skin?
During all states of pregnancy maternity clothes can be difficult to fit and make you feel stylish.
Igoe offers her top beauty do’s and don’ts:
Do
Buy transitional clothing to wear in different seasons. Three quarter length sleeves work well for summer and fall, just add a sweater.
Everyone should have the following wardrobe necessities: well-fitting jeans, one pair of stretchy black slacks and one wrap dress.
Buy a Bella Band, a piece of stretchy fabric that allows you wear your pre-pregnancy jeans unbuttoned.
Accessorize. “Wear the same things over again, but make them look different with accessories.” Her example: use a long tunic as a dress, or as a shirt with leggings, and then add jewelry.
Wear prints; “Prints actually break it up, so you’re not so focused on your belly.”
Don’t
Buy regular clothes in a bigger size. “You’re still spending money and ending up with clothes that don’t fit anywhere else.”
Buy too late, and walk around with your pants unbuttoned.
Buy too large, not realizing that most maternity clothes are made to be stretchy and grow with you.
Wait too long to buy a nursing bra. “Buy them before you give birth. You’ll be so busy after the baby’s born, you’ll send your husband in, and he’ll buy the wrong size.”
There are options like buying maternity wear online or shopping the discount stores. But in a store like Apple Seed, they will hand you a fake belly to see how you’ll grow. “Our business is part counseling and part retail, but it’s always a one-on-one personal shopping experience,” Igoe laughs. It may be the first baby of the year who grabs the media headlines but it’s the last baby of the year who yields the tax savings. Babies born before the stroke of midnight this New Year’s Eve could save their parents thousands on their 2008 returns and earn some awesome swag.
Tax preparer, H & R Block has teamed with several hospitals around the country to offer great prize baskets and a free tax return for the last baby born in 2008 in the participating hospitals
“Mere minutes can mean major tax savings this New Year’s Eve,” said Amy McAnarney, executive director of The Tax Institute at H&R Block (NYSE: HRB). “Babies born on Dec. 31 provide parents with a retroactive tax exemption for all of 2008. To get that same tax break, parents of babies born after midnight on Jan. 1 will have to wait until they file their 2009 taxes – in 2010.”
In addition to an exemption worth $3,500 in 2008, new parents may qualify to claim two other credits that could further reduce this year’s tax liability.
The Child Tax Credit is worth as much as $1,000 per child, regardless of whether taxpayers file as a single or jointly. To qualify, parents must have earned income of at least $8,500. And, even parents without any tax liability may be eligible for this refundable credit.
The Earned Income Tax Credit is available to lower-income workers. The amount of the credit varies with income, the number of qualifying children and whether a single or joint return is filed. EITC is also a refundable credit so it can reduce a taxpayer’s liability below $0, resulting in a refund.
For future years, taxpayers who pay someone to look after their baby while they work or look for work may qualify for the Child Care Credit. Income limitations apply to this tax benefit so a tax or financial professional should be consulted about individual tax situations.
For more information about the tax benefits of having a child or for other year-end tax tips, visit hrblock.com.
Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz turn to Cesar the Dog Whisperer in an upcoming episode — filmed when Ashlee was still seven months pregnant — for help in calming down their aggressive bulldog before the baby arrives. Indeed, we don’t want the dog, Hemingway, to take a bite out of Bronx Mowgli. Though maybe they could have a chat together about their silly names.
Sara and Richard Sault, of Morongo Valley, put their youngster to bed after a visit at the Neonatal Intensive Care unit at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills. The baby, named Richard Walker Sault, was born on December 23 and weighed in at a whopping 14 pound, 2 ounces — the largest on record at the hospital and perhaps in the county.
Several agencies are reporting Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France winner and girlfriend, Anna Hansen are expecting a child in June. This will be the fourth child for Armstrong, who conceived his other three children with fertility assistance after his cancer treatment. The baby due in June was conceived without the use of artificial fertilization.
Hansen is a Program Manager and Recruiter for First Descents, an organization that offers outdoor adventure experiences for young adults with cancer.
Armstrong retired from cycling in 2005, but has decided to make a comeback to raise cancer awareness with plans to compete in the 2009 Tour de France.
When it comes to their clothes, pregnant women usually want two things: Style that’s comfortable, and clothing that reveals that, yes, they are pregnant (not just caving to midnight snack cravings).
Priscilla Hubbard had a growing problem: her belly. She was pregnant for the first time, with nothing to wear. So she did what most other pregnant women in her situation would do. She went shopping.
But Hubbard came home empty-handed. “Everything was either too short, too sheer, or had no sleeves,” she says. “Nothing seemed to work with every style, all the time.”
For her part, Hubbard didn’t have new clothes that fit her new shape, but she did have sewing skills. So what she couldn’t find in stores, she made herself. “I sewed a shirt tight enough that it gave me support around my quickly expanding belly,” she says. “Then I discovered that I could wear this shirt with my favorite non-maternity jeans while disguising the fact that they were unzipped! I loved the shirt so much, I had to share it with the world.”
That was the start of Hubbard’s clothing line, Scrunchbump, and the result is maternity that doesn’t look like maternity. Scrunchbump tops (the line now includes three: the Signature Capped Sleeve, the Signature Cami and the Signature Tank) were designed for layering, so pregnant women can continue to wear many of their favorite pre-pregnancy shirts, or to wear on their own. The fabric and construction accentuate a pregnant belly in a flattering way – and don’t cut into the skin on the top part of the belly, as band-type products often do. And they’re just as flattering post pregnancy.
Most important, Scrunchbump tops scrunch or stretch to fit both now and later – a feature every expectant mom would be grateful to have in her wardrobe.

Winter is upon us, which means it’s time to hibernate. For some expectant and new moms, sleep can seem like a far off dream. The basic sleep bra is essential for any new mom who likes her shut-eye.
Motherhood Maternity has answered a few questions about this necessity.
· Why does she need one? The sleep bra is a must for nighttime support and nursing. Wearing this bra can help reduce back pain, sagging, and stretch marks because it holds her in place all night. This bra also has thicker straps that won’t dig into the shoulders and soft, comfortable elastic under the bust.
· When does she need one? A sleep bra is essential throughout pregnancy and nursing, but is especially beneficial around month 6 and beyond. The sleep bra is also a great choice for low impact exercise.
· How does it function when nursing? When nursing, comfort is key. The sleep bra’s soft, stretchy cotton spandex fabric hugs the bust without constricting. The sleep bra holds nursing pads in place throughout the night and its simple wrap design and pull over function makes it ideal for nighttime or daytime use. This versatile bra also feels great under nursing sleepwear.
· How many does she need? A minimum of 3: one to wear, one to wash, and one to have ready.
I am wondering if I will look like her if I wear a sleep bra every night!

Heartburn goes hand in hand with pregnancy. However, a new study warns that antacid use in pregnancy may increase a child’s risk for asthma.
The study, published online today in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Allergy, tracked 585,000 children born in Sweden. Using various registries, the researchers were able to obtain information on whether the mothers took antacids during pregnancy, had any history of allergy and whether their children were ever hospitalized for allergic disorders or received a prescription for allergies or asthma. They found that 1% of the children had been exposed to acid suppression medications during pregnancy and more than 5% had received a diagnosis of allergies or asthma. The mother’s use of antacids was linked to a 43% greater likelihood that a child would have an allergic condition, with asthma being the most common. The increased asthma risk in the child was highest among mothers with no history of allergies who took antacids during pregnancy.

Britax Child Safety, Inc. announced today that it is conducting a voluntary safety recall on the Frontier™ combination Harness-2-Booster™ child restraints. The recall includes Frontier child restraints manufactured between April 1, 2008 and September 14, 2008 for Model #s E9L54E7, E9L54H6, E9L54H7 and E9L54M6 and between April 1, 2008 and September 17, 2008 on Model # E9L5490.
If the harness straps are repeatedly loosened one strap at a time, then the harness strap(s) may become detached from the metal yoke located on the back of the child seat. If the harness strap(s) becomes loose or detached then the condition can be corrected by inspecting the back of the child seat and reattaching the harness straps. If this condition occurs, the child may not be properly restrained, and in the event of a vehicle crash there could be an increased risk of injury.
To address this issue, Britax will provide two rubber caps that can be easily placed on the yoke slots to prevent the harness straps from detaching. The rubber caps have been specifically designed for the Frontier yoke to provide a secure fit and have been tested to verify their effectiveness.
No later than January 7, 2009, the rubber caps will be mailed with an instruction sheet to all registered Frontier child restraint owners with manufacturing dates prior to September 15 or 18, 2008. Additional caps will be made available to retailers with affected inventory of Frontiers manufactured prior to September 15 or 18, 2008. All Frontier child restraint owners should confirm whether their Frontier is affected by verifying the date of manufacture. Starting December 15, 2008, further details will be available at www.FrontierRecall.com.
Until consumers receive their remedy kit, they should confirm that their harness system is properly attached to the metal yoke and they may continue to safely use their child restraint.
Owners of the Frontier child restraint who have not registered their product or need to verify existing registration should contact the Britax information line, toll free at 1-800-683-2045 or visit www.FrontierRecall.com.

Identical twins are as close as nature gets to human cloning. They look alike, sound alike, and can often lead strikingly similar lives – with the same jobs, tastes, hobbies, love interests, and phobias. But “clones” they are not, as any parent would attest. Now, with the state-of-the-art 4D ultrasound, National Geographic Channel goes In the Womb to reveal the hidden – and surprisingly different – world of twin fetal development. In this fourth installment of NGC’s critically acclaimed series, explore the fascinating findings that identical twins aren’t a 100 percent genetic match. Then, they examine a puzzle: identical twins who share the same set of genes, yet look very different.

When Claire Ekelund gave birth to her second daughter in 2003, she was proud to be an active nursing mom but recognized that, once again, nursing in public was going to be challenging. Like many nursing moms on-the-go, Claire was quickly reminded of how difficult it is to gracefully feed a wriggling baby and hold a blanket in position. She searched high and low for a solution, but found that nursing covers on the market at the time were clinical, impractical, and difficult to find. Leaving the room to feed Baby in privacy seemed the only alternative, yet this was not always an option.
Claire decided to create her own nursing cover, the Hooter Hider (dubbed so by an outspoken male friend): an easy-to-use, machine washable, multi-purpose stylish cover designed with Baby and Mom in mind. The difference between the patent-pending Hooter Hider and other nursing covers is the rigid neckline allowing Mom and Baby unobstructed eye contact during feeding and other thoughtful features such as a small-item storage and clean-up pocket made from the softest terry cloth. Mom sees Baby…Baby sees Mom…discreet…on-the-spot cleanup…perfect!
Swell is happy to be giving away two Bebe Au Lait nursing covers. To enter to win, send an email to support@swellpg.com, put Bebe Au Lait in the subject line and give us your name and address in the body. You have until Tuesday, December 2nd to enter.
A study by the Imperial College London said that women who are exposed to hairspray during pregnancy may be at an increased risk of giving birth to boys with a genital defect, HealthDay News reported.
The defect is a condition called hypospadias, in which the opening of the urethra is on the underside of the penis, instead of at the tip.
Researchers questioned more than 470 women whose sons were born with the condition and a similar number of women whose sons did not have the condition.
About twice as many females in the genital defect group said they were exposed to hairspray through their jobs as hairdressers, according to an article in BBC News.
However, there is no proof that exposure to hairspray can cause hypospadias, said the authors of the study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
“Women shouldn’t be alarmed,” said study leader Professor Paul Elliott. “This study adds a bit more evidence to the general picture about these chemicals, but more research will be needed to demonstrate that the link exists. Pregnant women will need to make their own choices about whether or not to avoid these kinds of exposures.”
MD Moms skin care products were created by two moms who also happen to be board-certified pediatricians. They understand that babies aren’t miniature adults. They need special products formulated just for them, with ingredients that are gentle, pure and effective. That’s why Baby Silk® skin and hair products include advanced ingredients like marine silk, botanicals, Vitamins E and B5 to provide antioxidant protection, relieve dryness, promote healing, and protect the skin’s natural moisture barrier. They also have a delicate botanical baby scent made from essential oils of orange and gala apple blossoms that’s almost as yummy as that new-baby smell. Every Baby Silk formulation is clinically tested, hypoallergenic and free of lanolin, mineral oil, petroleum, waxes, harmful chemicals and known skin irritants.
Gentle All-Over Clean
As moms, they understand that parents need products that make life easier when you’ve got a little wiggler on your changing table! The packaging is designed with baby’s safety in mind, too. Tubes have flip caps, so you can open and apply products with one hand. Bottles have wide bases, so they won’t tip over. Pumps lock, so your baby can’t sample our body wash while you’re soaping his back. Alcohol swabs come in single unit doses, to reduce the chance of spills. And our sunscreen comes in soft, luxurious towelettes that make allover application easy and safe!
To enter our giveaway for two of MD Moms’ Baby Silk best-selling products, soothing bottom relief and gentle all over clean, send an email to support@swellpg.com. Be sure to include MD Moms in the subject line and your name and address in the body. You have until Monday, December 1st to enter.
