Nursery Know How, Part 2

Nursery Know How is part two of a series on how to choose the best furniture, bedding, gliders, and much for the nursery of your dreams.

Last time we talked about choosing the best crib for baby.  This time we will add all the essential pieces to make your nursery complete, so let’s go!

Crib Mattress
A crib mattress, even though may not be the most “fun” addition to your registry, should be a purchase that is not taken lightly.

A mattress should be firm and make sure that it correctly fits in your crib.  Test the mattress in the middle between both hands for firmness.  You should have no more than two finger’s width between the mattress and all sides of the crib when centered on the mattress platform.  Mattress dimensions are 27 5/8” wide and 51 ¾” to 53” in length compared to crib dimensions which are 25 5/8” to 27 ¼” in width.

Multiple layers of non-PVC covering with cloth binding around the seam are a sign of a good quality mattress.

The crib mattresses can be filled with foam or coils.  Foam should be 1.5 pounds per cubic foot.  The coil in the mattress should be 5 to 6 inches in depth.  Stick with 150 coils, 80 is too little and 250 is overkill.

In regards to a mattress cover, look for microfiber polyester with a waterproof backing and has a snug fit around the mattress.

Don’t forget about the sheets!  Elastic all-around the sheet can be much safer rather than just at the corners.  Always buy 3 sheets, one for the crib mattress, one for the washing machine, and one laundered and ready to go and 4 waterproof crib pads.  Trust me!!

If you choose to place bumper pads in the crib, there are some thinks to keep in mind for safety.  Federal law requires the fill in bumpers be 100% polyester and Dacron is the best.  Ties must be on top AND bottom, 7 to 9 inches in length and at least 12 to 16 total.

As soon as your child can pull themselves up, the bumper pads should be removed so they do not climb on and out of the crib!

Changing Table
The next piece of important “must have” for the nursery is a changing table.  Whether it is an actual changing table or a dresser you converted, there are some things to think about.

More than 2,000 children are injured each year for falling off a changing table; the risk is greater between 7 to 10 months during the roll over period.

If a changing table does not have raised sides, add a contoured pad with a safety strap, and a nonslip surface.  Pick a changing pad cover that is designed to fit your pad (flat vs. contoured) and has slots for the safety straps  Always buy 3 pads, one for the changing table, one for the washing machine, and one laundered and ready to go and 4 waterproof lap pads for unexpected messes under the bum!

Anchor changing areas to walls to avoid tipping!!!

Nursing Chair
Make the midnight feedings a bit more comfortable with a place for parent and baby to bond…the nursing chair.  Swivel gliders (which swivel from side to side) are new on the forefront and make it easier to reach for items and exit in front of an ottoman.  Do not forget the doublewide gliders which are nice for twins or another sibling.

Look for a smooth movement, comfortable back support, arm height that is well positioned, a large seat, the correct height and depth for your legs, and removable slip covers or easy to clean upholstery.  The same goes for rocking chairs, whether it is new or a family heirloom.

Check for delivery time for all chairs!!!

Well, I think we covered all the “must have” items for the nursery of your dreams.  These items are essential to keeping your nursery safe for baby yet comfortable for mommies and daddies.  Happy Nursery!
