SIDS Prevention

Earlier this week, researchers at Kaiser Permanente researchers found that using a fan when a baby is sleeping could result in significantly fewer cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), often called crib death. But in most cases, thick high bumpers on cribs limit the ability for the air to circulate around the crib.

Swell Pregnancy Guide has found several bumper solutions that have a lower profile allowing for increased airflow and still look fashionable inside the crib.

CozyWedgeInspired Ideas’ Cozy Wedge - CozyWedge bumpers fit snugly around the crib, won’t slip down and are easy to remove for sheet changing. They cushion the crib for your baby but they have a safer, firm surface that won’t form a pocket around a baby’s mouth and nose. The shock-absorbing foam is the same foam used in swimming noodles, and is totally nonabsorbent, CFC-free and odorless. The slipcovers are completely washable.

Crib FringeBabylicious Crib Fringe - The Crib Fringe concept is simple: tie each length of fringe to the top rail on the long side of the crib (tie on inside when baby is young and can’t reach up yet, and move to the outside when baby can reach up). And when baby is old enough to sit up, use the crib fringe as a pennant or as a valance on your window!

Cozie CribEngage Environments’ Crib CozieTM - The Crib Cozie system includes two low profile foam rolls in covered in ivory with satin accents and two terry wedges for the head and foot of the crib. A safe alternative to crib bumpers, the Cozies are designed to be removed from the crib to enhance physical development as infants become mobile, eventually serving as imaginary play toys and bed bolsters.

Rolley PoleysGo Mama Go’s Rolley Poleys - RolleyPoleys soft, protective, vertical padding prevents hard crib rails from harming your baby’s head and body as she learns to sit, crawl and stand. They allow better air circulation, thus reducing any unnecessary risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). They tightly wrap around the crib rail so there is no need to remove them for safety reasons after a few months. Your baby cannot use them as leverage to push its body over the crib. They will be available in January 09.
